The restaurant still stands today, but you wouldn’t know it.

Located on the 9th floor of the Complexe des Ailes, the property’s current owner keeps the restaurant locked up. It was only 15 years ago when it closed, yet the name Eaton has faded from the minds of many.

The restaurant was built in 1931 at the behest of Lady Eaton as a way to introduce upscale dining to Canadians. It was designed by French Architect Jacques Carlu and its look was based off of a French ocean liner to evoke the romance of transatlantic travel.

The restaurant had a strong cultural importance to the city as it was known as a place where women could dine without the need for male accompaniment. Mothers would often bring their children.

The future of the site now remains in doubt. The Complexe des Ailes is closing in 2014 and it’s not known what will happen to the building. The 9th Floor restaurant is one of the last ornate art deco interior designs still intact on the continent. For now it remains behind locked doors slowly deteriorating waiting to become alive once again.
